Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper • The Hickory Years, 1955-1962 CD

Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper enjoyed one of the most remarkable careers of any husband-and-wife duo in Country Music, performing together from the late 1930s until Stoney's death in 1977. Throughout those decades they remained firmly rooted in traditional Appalachian Mountain music, even as Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly and the emerging Nashville sound transformed the musical landscape around them.

This collection brings together the very best of their Hickory Records singles from 1955 to 1962, including a dozen C&W chart hits alongside several harder-to-find sides. Their distinctive harmonies, traditional instrumentation and powerful songs provide a fascinating snapshot of Appalachian Country Music during a period when musical styles were changing rapidly. The collection also includes two collaborations with Al Terry.

With 33 tracks spanning seven years of recordings, The Hickory Years, 1955-1962 is an excellent collection for anyone interested in traditional Country, Appalachian music and the roots of the sound that ran alongside early Rockabilly. It also serves as the companion volume to The Columbia Years, 1949-54.
