Attack Of The Giant Purple Lobsters finds Washington Dead Cats sounding just as gloriously unhinged as ever, with a psychotic cocktail of Rockabilly, Surf and Garage Punk driven along by horns and a suitably punchy production. Originally released in 2019, this is the kind of record where B-movie science fiction, Punkabilly attitude and trashy Rock 'n' Roll collide in spectacular fashion. The result is a colourful, energetic album from one of the more distinctive bands to emerge from the French Psychobilly scene.
The title track launches proceedings with an appropriately frantic blast, followed by Give Me The Fire, Road To Heaven and the darkly atmospheric You Came To Haunt Me. I Can't Stop Loving You and Satan's Grave bring plenty of twisted Rockabilly attitude, while Giant Purple Lobsters Strike Back continues the album's wonderfully absurd sci-fi theme. There's no shortage of Surf influence either, with Surfing Over Tsunamis providing another great example of the band's ability to mix styles, while Hellhound On My Trail, I Got A Tiger In My Pants, Empty House and What Can You Lose? keep the pace and eccentricity levels suitably high.
Pressed on purple vinyl, Attack Of The Giant Purple Lobsters is a cracking choice for anyone who likes their Psychobilly, Rockabilly and Garage Punk with Surf, horns and a healthy dose of B-movie madness. Washington Dead Cats have never been particularly interested in keeping their influences neatly separated, and that adventurous spirit is exactly what makes this such an entertaining listen. A seriously lively piece of French Punkabilly vinyl for anyone who enjoys the stranger, louder and more colourful corners of the scene.
