Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones were all young teenagers when they made rock 'n' roll history in 1957 with Black Slacks, a genuine smash hit and chart success. This superb 38-track collection brings together the complete recordings of the Spartanburg, South Carolina rockers.
Led by Bennett's rousing lead guitar and vocals alongside rhythm guitarist Howard "Sparky" Childress, with Wayne Arthur on bass and Jimmy "Sticks" Denton on drums, the group delivered a distinctive blend of energetic teenage rock 'n' roll. The collection covers their earliest recordings through to their rare final ABC Records single, along with material issued on Spanish EPs and their appearance on Nat 'King' Cole's television show.
From the irresistible Black Slacks and Boppin' Rock Boogie to the later Spanish-language recordings, What The Heck! is a fascinating and comprehensive look at one of the memorable young groups of the first rock 'n' roll era.
