Signs and Signifiers is a superb debut from J D McPherson, an artist with a powerful voice and a real feel for the raw, rocking spirit of 1950s Rock 'n' Roll and Rhythm & Blues. There's nothing museum-piece about McPherson's approach: the songs have the punch and character of classic American roots music while sounding fresh and genuinely alive. Produced by Jimmy Sutton, whose own pedigree includes the Mighty Blue Kings, Four Charms and Del Moroccos, this is an excellent introduction to an artist who knows exactly how to make vintage sounds hit hard.
The album gets off to a flying start with North Side Gal, one of those instantly compelling rockers that sets the tone for what follows. Country Boy and Your Love bring a strong Rhythm & Blues flavour, while Fire Bug and Scandalous turn up the heat with plenty of raw energy. There's also room for the atmospheric Signs & Signifiers, the punchy Wolf Teeth, the bluesy Dimes For Nickels and the wonderfully titled B.G.M.O.S.R.N.R., giving the album enough variety to keep the momentum moving without losing its rootsy identity.
For anyone looking for modern Rock 'n' Roll with a genuine connection to the sounds of the 1950s, Signs and Signifiers is a particularly worthwhile LP. McPherson's voice, sharp songwriting and love of early Rock 'n' Roll and Rhythm & Blues combine into an album that feels authentic without simply copying the past. A great choice for Rockabilly and Rock 'n' Roll fans who like their revival music played with conviction, musicianship and plenty of bite.
