Peter Baylor • I Hear The Road CD

Pete Baylor is a master guitarist and songwriter who has been an important figure in the Australian Rockabilly scene for decades. Best known for his work with the Flatfoot Shakers, Stringbusters, Baylor Brothers and Dancehall Racketeers, Baylor brings together a lifetime of musical influences on I Hear The Road.

Recorded at the legendary Preston Studios, this is a terrific collection of original songs inspired by the sounds of 1950s Americana, filtered through Baylor's distinctly Australian perspective. His superb guitar playing is at the heart of the album, but it's the songwriting that really makes I Hear The Road stand out, with each track adding another piece to a musical journey through Rockabilly, Country and Hillbilly territory.

The album opens with the excellent Roadhouse Romeo before moving through If That's Not Wrong It Must Be Right, I've Got Troubles On My Mind and All Night Long. Tarcutta, I Hear The Road and My Baby Was Born To Rock showcase Baylor's knack for memorable songs, while the wonderfully titled When Grandma Got High adds a little humour to the proceedings.

With fourteen original tracks and a sound that combines authentic 1950s influences with the character of the Australian Rockabilly scene, I Hear The Road is a fascinating album from a musician who has spent years playing this music at the highest level. If you know Pete Baylor's other bands, this is an essential addition to the collection; if he's new to you, it's an excellent introduction to one of Australia's finest Rockabilly musicians.
