Buddy Holly & The Crickets - Alternative Chirping Crickets 10" LP (vinyl)
The Chirping Crickets was already regarded as a classic on its release in the USA, Great Britain and Australia, but the Crickets themselves were not entirely happy with some of the overdubbed vocal-group backing added to their recordings. This fascinating 10-inch LP presents an alternative version of the album, built around the original undubbed recordings wherever they survived.
Crickets drummer J. I. Allison was closely involved in the project, which took several years to complete. Many of the vocal overdubs had been added while the Crickets were touring during the first flush of success following the number one hit That'll Be The Day, making the surviving undubbed performances particularly interesting. The process of de-mixing and re-mixing the recordings is explained in detail in the accompanying liner notes, alongside J. I. Allison's memories of the songs and the original sessions.
Presented in 10-inch format with the artwork from the Australian release, this is a particularly intriguing alternative take on one of the defining albums of early rock 'n' roll. With 12 essential Buddy Holly & The Crickets recordings including Oh Boy!, Not Fade Away, Maybe Baby, That'll Be The Day and I'm Looking For Someone To Love, plus detailed notes from one of the musicians who was there, it offers both familiar favourites and a revealing glimpse into how these classic recordings were originally heard.
