The Milkshakes • 107 Tapes CD

107 Tapes is a fascinating collection of early demos and live recordings from The Milkshakes, capturing the band at the raw beginnings of the sound that would become synonymous with the Medway Garage scene. The first 11 tracks are early demos recorded at 107 Rochester Street in Chatham on 3 July 1981, featuring Billy Childish and Mickey Hampshire on guitars and vocals, Bruce Brand on drums and Martin Waller on saxophone.

The second half moves to Germany in 1983 for 15 live recordings, with the band tearing through numbers including Let's Stomp, Eaten More Honey, Tell Me Where's That Girl, Little Queenie, Jaguar, Black Sails (In The Moonlight) and Soldiers Of Love. The contrast between the rough early demos and the full-blooded live performances makes this a particularly revealing snapshot of The Milkshakes' development.

Primitive British Beat, tough Rock 'n' Roll and the influence of American guitar sounds such as Link Wray's collide throughout the collection, delivered with the deliberately unpolished approach that became a defining feature of the band's music. Originally issued as a 1986 compilation, 107 Tapes was subsequently reissued on CD, making these early demos and German live recordings available together in one excellent archival set.
