Robert Brown was born in Arkansas in 1910 and tried out various nicknames before Washboard Sam stuck to him in the 1930s when he moved to Chicago.
He recorded artist for Vocalion and Bluebird Records before moving to Chess Records where he made these superb recordings featuring his half-brother Big Bill Broonzy.
