Joe Meek & The Blue Men
Joe Meek's Tea Chest Tapes: I Hear A New World Sessions 10" LP (vinyl)
Exploring the sessions that yielded the ahead- of-it’s-time I Hear A New World album, presenting previously unheard versions and out-takes in superb new clarity, taken directly from Joe Meek’s own tape archive.
Over 60 years since the release of the original I Hear A New World (part 1) EP, it remains, as described on the original 7” sleeve, a “strange record”.
Recorded with The Blue Men, a former skiffle group led by Rod Freeman, at Lansdowne Studios and in Joe Meek’s Holloway Road flat, this 1960 “outer space music fantasy” was not only intended to take the listener somewhere they’d never been before, but to do it in stereo!
Over the years, that highly collectable EP, and the album from which it was taken have developed cult status, both for the studio ingenuity and as an insight into the man who put it all together.
For the first time here is I Hear A New World as it’s never been heard before, a collection of alternate versions taken directly from the original tapes.
The Blue Men are heard still learning their parts, while a haunting female vocal on ‘Orbit Around The Moon’ conveys all of Joe Meek’s otherworldly intent.
Presented as two continuous suites; and interspersed with previously unheard material from the sound effects tapes used in creating I Hear A New World, this Limited Edition 10" release provides an exciting insight into what remains a “strange record”.
