Donna Dunne & The Mystery Men
Voodoo LP (vinyl)
When she released her first single Woman In Black back in 2012, Dublin based singer Donna Dunne immediately drew comparison with Irish rockabilly star Imelda May.
Simply grouping her gender, her nationality and her music genre and coming up with "The New Imelda" is a little short-sighted, and although Donna took the likening as a compliment, her debut album shows just how much more than this she has to offer.
Backed by a trio of superb musicians, including Phil Bloomberg who has previously enjoyed both genre and commercial success as bassist for rockabilly cult heroes The Polecats, Donna blows the dust from a long-established music style, making it sound fresh and new despite being in it's eighth decade.
Her style of rockabilly encompasses Country, Blues, Gypsy Jazz and Punk, led by a soulful vocal and driven by a tight and talented band - certainly nothing new in this blend - the unique ingredient being Dunne herself and the excellent set of songs that she has gathered to create such a stunning debut album.
