When Rock 'n' Roll arose in the mid-1950s, Louis Jordan's contract with Decca was not renewed. However, Jordan's former manger had founded soon to be major Chicago label Mercury Records and signed up Jordan with a new Tympany 5 made up of top New York, Chicago and Hollywood musicians including Sam "The Man" Taylor on tenor sax, pianist Ernie Hayes, and Mickey Baker. Mercury marketed Jordan as "The Original Rock And Roller" making an astute reference to his place among the progenitors of R&B and, therefore, Rock 'n' Roll.
The 27 recordings featured here from 1956 & '57 are every bit as lively and infectious as Jordan's earlier output, and the CD booklet includes photos and detailed liner notes covering the period.
