Our chart this month includes several of new 4-disc sets which offer a generous selection of original recordings from legendary artists from the Rock 'n' Roll era.
Heading the Rock 'n' Roll chart is a set from Marvin Rainwater which includes the entire contents of three original album releases, augmented with a wealth of bonus tracks taken from his non-album singles.
Marvin Rainwater scored two UK hit singles - "Whole Lotta Woman" reached No.1 in March 1958, followed by "I Dig You Baby" which climbed into the Top 20 in June the same year. He enjoyed further successes in the USA where he also charted with "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" in 1957 and "Half Breed" in 1959. Also of these are included in the collection.
Other new releases in this series which have made our chart come in the form of Rhythm & Blues legend Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Skiffle king Lonnie Donegan, Country singer and guitarist Merle Travis, and a 100 track round-up of 1962 releases on the Mercury label which features Johnny Preston, Little Richard, Rusty Draper, Young Jessie, Clyde McPhatter, Jivin' Gene, Paul Peek and many others.
Our Rockabilly chart is topped by a vinyl release from Brian Setzer. "Backstreets Of New York" is a limited edition release in 12" leopard print coloured vinyl, featuring four previously unreleased alternate studio demos from the 1986 "Knife Feels Like Justice" album sessions.
Two collaborations have also climbed high - "Angels With Dirty Faces" is a CD release which sees well known British rockers Johnnie Fox (from The Hunters) and John O'Malley (The Nitros/Good Rockin' Tonight) join forces, and "Keep On Rockin'" is a joint projects by Swedish Teddyboy Rock 'n' Roll favourites Snakebite and British rockers The Wild Angels.
There are also new albums from The Real Gone Tones (Poland), The Frantic Rockers (USA) and the debut album from Burlesque performer Molly Moonstone fronting a rockin' band which features Lester Peabody on guitar.
New releases for the Psychobilly scene come in the form of a coloured vinyl limited edition re-issue of scene favourites The Long Tall Texans 1989 album "Saturnalia" and the third studio album by female fronted Hungarian Punk-a-Billies The Hellfreaks.
